Dr Judith Daire – Post-doctoral Fellow

Dr Judith Daire is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Health Economics Unit. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Postgraduate Certificate in midwifery from the University of Malawi (Kamuzu College of Nursing); and a Masters degree in Health Management, Planning and Policy with first class credit from the University of Leeds in the UK.

In 2009, she was awarded a PhD for a thesis titled “Malawi’s Maternal and Child Health Policies: Analysis, lessons and strategies for addressing gaps” from the University of Cape Town. In her final year of study (2009), Judith worked as a consultant for MSF to establish and run a Tuberculosis (TB) Care Centre (24 hour in-patient care facility) in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. She began working for the HEU in April, 2010. Her work experience centres on healthcare services management and reproductive health project management.

Research interests: Health policy, health systems research, health management; reproductive health; and maternal and child health

Current research projects: District health systems strengthening research (District Innovation, Action and Learning for Health Systems Development in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town). This is a participatory research on strengthening district level management and planning processes through innovative approach of reflective practice and action learning  

Current teaching: Judith is involved in teaching the Health Policy and Planning module for the Masters in Public Health Programme.
