Professor Gill Walt – Honorary Professor

I am Professor of International Health Policy and am situated in the Health Policy Unit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and was appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town in 2009. Although I have ‘officially’ retired, I am still active in research, and come into the School two days a week. I have a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Before joining the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine I worked in the Ministry of Health in Mozambique, and have since worked for short periods in many countries in Southern Africa, as well as other parts of the developing world. I have published widely, taking a special interest in the role of international organisations in health. My latest book, written with colleagues Kent Buse and Nicholas Mays, is entitled ‘Making Health Policy’ and was published by the Open University Press in 2005.

My research interests include policy transfer between international and national jurisdictions, especially in relation to infectious diseases, the growth of global public-private partnerships and global health initiatives such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Research interests: Globalisation, Health inequalities, Health policy, Infectious disease

Current research projects: I have three current research projects. One explores the role of global HIV/AIDS initiatives and their effects on countries’ health systems. This is a collaborative study with colleagues at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and research groups in 17 countries. See our website: www.ghin.org. Another is working with Lucy Gilson at the Health Economics Unit, University of Cape Town and others on health policy analysis and methods for synthesis. A third focuses on an investigation (with Valeria Oliveira-Cruz) on the nexus between research and the policy process in relation to a particular malaria intervention (IPTi).

Current teaching: My teaching is on international health policy, looking particularly at the policy process. I advise a number of PhD or DrPH students on using policy analysis as an approach to their research.
