7th iHEA World Congress

The iHEA (International Health Economics Association) 7th World Congress held in Beijing during July 2009, was attended by 2000 delegates. The event focused on harmonising health and economics.
The HEU made the following presentations, which can be downloaded from the conference papers web page:

  • Sue Cleary: Is the utilisation of ART in urban South Africa equitable?
  • Okore Okorafor: Fiscal Federalism and Equity in Resource Allocation to Primary Health Care
  • Edina Sinanovic: The potential cost-effectiveness of adding a human papillomavirus vaccine to the cervical cancer screening programme in South Africa.
  • James Akazili: The incidence of health care financing in Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania.
  • John Ataguba:
    • The catastrophic effects of out-of-pocket payment for health care across three African countries – Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania.
    • Catastrophic health care payment reconsidered: An ethical perspective with application to Nigeria (poster presentation)
    • Implications of the analysis of financing and benefit incidence in Ghana, South Africa and Tanzania for health insurance policy debates

5th IAS Conference

The 5th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2009) was held in Cape Town in July 2009. This is the world’s largest open scientific conference on HIV/AIDS. It attracts about 5000 delegates. Dr Sue Cleary was invited to be a discussant at an ANRS symposium which was part of the IAS.
