The 8th International Health Economics Association (iHEA) conference took place in Canada from 10th to 13th July 2011.

HEU researchers gave the following presentations / poster preparations:

• Equity in Financing and Delivery of Healthcare in Three African Countries: Policy Implications on the Role of Health Insurance for Progressing to Universal Coverage (presentation by D. McIntyre)
• “Chronic” and “Transient” Catastrophic Health Care Payments (presentation by J. Ataguba)
• Impact of Socioeconomic Characteristics on Under-five Malnutrition in South Africa: A Multilevel Analysis (poster & short presentation by O. Alaba)
• Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) for Eliciting Public Preferences for Health System Changes in South Africa (poster & short presentation by A. Honda).

In a special iHEA TV interview, Executive Director Tom Getzen and Director of Operations Bill Swan commented that the conference is the premier meeting for health economists from all over the world and that there is growing recognition of the crucial part health economics plays in policy.

Plans are already in place for the build up to the next 2013 conference, which will be in Sydney.
