Meeting at the 8th iHEA – International Health Economics Association conference in Canada recently, researchers from South Africa, Asia and Latin America launched the new Global Network for Health Equity (GNHE – pronounced’gini’).
GNHE is a truly south-south collaborative initiative funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). It links 3 existing health financing networks: EQUITAP – Equity in Asia-Pacific Health systems, an Asia-Pacific Research Partnership; LANET – The Latin American and Caribbean Research Network on Financial Protection and Health Observatory; SHIELD – Strategies for Health Insurance for Equity in Less Developed Countries, an African network.
The HEU plays it’s role through the SHIELD project – which was a research project carried out in 3 African countries (SA, Ghana & Tanzania), that critically analysed the health financing issues of each country.
Continuing it’s work in reaching a National Health Insurance scheme, the HEU will work closely with the other countries to forward the movement.
