The Health Economics & Policy Network in Africa (HEPNet – coordinated by the HEU), convened a 3-day workshop looking at how the GEC (Global Economic Crisis) will affect health systems in Africa. The workshop consisted of 3 parts:
a) understanding the global economy and the genesis of the crisis;
b) implications and effects of GEC on health;
c) recommendations to prevent and mitigate adverse public health consequences
There were country presentations from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Ghana. The workshop was well attended by approximately 50 members. The outcomes of the workshop will be posted on the new HEPNet website, which will be launched in 2010.
